What is Coquelicot?

To answer simply: it is the French word for Poppy.

Why Coquelicot?, is a trickier question, perhaps best answered by taking a detour from the question; and beginning this story in the year 2004.

Thirteen years ago in Honolulu--America's 50th State--Kayla Morikami was being reprimanded in front of her entire science class of 24 other students. The enraged teacher (who was not the first to become enraged) was upset over the fact that she had been falling asleep during class.

This was the first time, however, it was brought to the principal and counselor's attention. Following this, Kayla was promptly diagnosed at a hospital with Narcolepsy; a neurological disorder which causes sudden sleep episodes.

Once Kayla was prescribed medication, Kayla continued to enjoy mathematics and sciences, and tried to pursue a baccalaureate degree at Seattle University in Actuarial Sciences and Finance. However, she soon discovered that with narcolepsy, she was unsuited for the desk work.

Returning to Hawaii, she found a part-time job taking apart roasted chicken carcasses for the mother of one of her high school classmates. Despite the minimum wages and the greasy work, she was awake--and enjoyed the physical act of working with food, and being in a kitchen.

Kayla graduated from deboning chickens to making hundreds of mini gingerbread houses. She liked real baking even better! Kayla kept working on bigger and more difficult tasks, and earned herself a full-time position at Sweet Revenge Bakery.

After working her way up to a position of manager at the bakery, and putting herself through culinary school, Kayla has finally begun her own bakeshop and restaurant, named Coquelicot.

Coquelicots or Poppies symbolize sleep, dreams, death.

A good representation for her narcolepsy, her dreams of owning a bakeshop in which she can bring her imaginative creations into existence, and her skill at making food to die for.

Kayla has always has a certain way of doing things, and has been even known as a stickler. When asked if something is up to her standard, she will always respond with her own, "Is it more than worth it?" Making sure the guests happy with what they eat, and the workers are proud of what they've produced.
